Costa Rica is known for its abundant tropical wildlife. It has over 800 species of birds and over 100 species of mammals ranging from tapirs to large cats as well as 150 kinds of reptiles including crocodiles and caymens. The country of Costa Rica leads the world in encouraging
eco-tourism
within its own borders. A total of 23% of the country has been set aside by the government as national parks or conservation areas. Some of the country's national parks limit the number of visitors allowed to enter the parks on a daily basis. Another factor than makes Costa Rica a desirable place to visit is due to its friendly people and political stability. The country is a democratic republic with a long history of peaceful elections. Costa Rica outlawed its military in 1948. There have been twelve presidential elections since that time. Due to its location, educated population and political stability international companies like Intel are investing in Costa Rica. This year (2007) the citizens of Costa Rica approved the Central American Free Trade Agreement. This should improve the countries ability to attract further foreign investment and development. It has easy access to American markets and is on the same time zone as the US central standard time.
