Costa Rican Desserts!

Costa Rican desserts unlike Costa Rica food are sweet and rich! If you have a "sweet tooth" you will enjoy sampling some of the more popular Costa Rican desserts and candies. You may even want to try your hand at your own Costa Rican dessert recipe. Many of the recipes are easy to make and are a fun family or couple activity.

Here are some common Costa Rica desserts:

- "Queque Seco" (Orange Pound Cake),

- "Miel de Chiverre"

- "Tres Leches"

- "Arroz con Leche" (rice pudding)

- "Cono Capuchino" (an ice-cream cone topped with chocolate)

- "Flan" (cold caramel custard)

- "Milanes" (chocolate candies)

- "Pan de Maiz" (a type of sweet bread)

- "Torta Chilena" (a multilayered cake filled with "dulce de leche", a syrup of boiled milk and sugar)

Here are some easy to prepare Costa Rican desserts:

"Balitos de Coco"

35 minutes until ready, 20 minutes of preparation2 cups condensed milk1 cup fresh coconut, shredded1 cup butter or margarine1/2 cup graham wafer crumbs1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Combine all the ingredients in a pan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon. Continue to cook for 5 minutes after it reaches a boil. As soon as it is cool enough to handle form small balls, place in paper cups. Store in sealed container.

Orange Custard

6 big oranges; Cinnamon Sticks to taste; 1/2 cup maicena; 2 cups sugar; 1 tsp- butter

Wash the oranges, cut them in half and extract carefully the juice. Keep the skin halves and remove partitions.

Mix the juice, the sugar and the Maicena and bring to a boil stirring constantly. When it starts boiling remove from stove and add a teaspoon of butter. Refill the skin halves with the custard and refrigerate until it sets. Decorate with mint leaves or cherries.
